"I recently purchased a photo of the SS-347 Cubera at a flea market. Photo size is approximately 12" by 20". The photo is taken in Cuba, with a Spanish fort in the background, maybe from the 50s, early 60s. The SS-347 Cubera is in the harbor. If anyone could give me any information on this photo I would appreciate it. The photographer is Illa, address Cuba. Thank you, Wendy Kelly"

"SS347 was my home from 57-61 as a sonarman under Chief Watson, and this site has brough back many memories. Here’s one that wasn’t mentioned. During a break in maneuvers with Task Force Alpha, Capt. Herzog did a photo-op dive for the other sub, and in trying to get the best surfacing picture, dove too steeply and had to surface almost straight up. Great picture but it scared the submarines out of us. "

""(1945 ??????????? 1946)* I was assigned to New Construction and the Cubera in 1945. I made frequent trips to Groton Ct to watch her being outfitted at the Electric Boat Co. I was in the commissioning crew, Dec. 1945 as a S1c Quartermaster striker. There???????????Ģs a photo floating around somewhere in my family archives of the commissioning crew, officers & men standing on deck at the event. (If I can locate it I will send it in). I was on the shakedown cruise, deep dive, ect, and went with the SS347 to Key West Fl where we did a lot of experimenting with sound equipment ??????????? homing torpedoes, & sonar, etc. I served under CO, LCDR R. W. Paine, and CO, LCDR G. W. Grider. I took my discharge (point system) in 1946. Chesley, Durow, and I did the quartermaster duties during my stint. Some of the names that are still in my memory bank are: ????????????Bull??????????? Watson, ????????????Moose???????????, ????????????Goose???????????, ????????????Mother???????????, ????????????Wop???????????, Pratt, ???????????. with some of the crew I never did know their real names. Congrats on the site .. brought up a lot of fun memories. (*Corrected dates)" "
