HomeTownAnnapolis.com April 7, 2007 James Stone Retired Navy Cmdr. James M. Stone, 79, a longtime Silver Spring resident, died of cancer March 31 at Brooke Grove Rehabilitation Center in Sandy Spring. Born on April 18, 1927, in Westbury, N.Y., Cmdr. Stone enlisted in the Navy in 1945. He witnessed the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific and later received a fleet appointment to the Naval Academy from which he graduated in 1952. While he was a plebe, his first classman ordered him to escort a young woman from New York City on a date. He married Audrey Stone six months after his graduation. After an initial tour on a destroyer he entered the submarine service and was on five submarines. He became commanding officer of the diesel submarine USS Cubera in 1966 and later served overseas at NATO headquarters on the Mediterranean island nation of Malta. He moved to Silver Spring in 1970, retiring in 1977. Subsequently he went on to work for the Vitro Corp., retiring again in 1990. Cmdr. Stone attended St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Silver Spring and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. In addition to his wife of 54 years, he is survived by five children, Kevin Stone of Arnold, Ken Stone of St. Paul, Minn., Gary Stone of Albuquerque, N.M., Rick Wellbeloved-Stone of Charlottesville, Va., and Tracy Stone-Manning of Missoula, Mont.; and nine grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. June 12 at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Blvd. West, Silver Spring. Services will be at noon June 13 at St. John the Baptist Church, 12319 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in Arlington National Cemetery.
